asking harry reid to ask and president obama to act. >> harry reid's his lifeline. let me ask you this. everybody watches politics. this isn't cnbc here, it's politics. let's get a couple things straight. you say right now that today it's a democratic advantage. obama looks like the guy is trying to get it done. republicans are the holdouts. >> it's not just me. look at the gallup reports. republicans have been going down. >> obama's 54%. right now it's a democratic advantage. >> democratic advantage right now. >> midnight monday still a democratic advantage? >> no. if you go over the cliff, everyone's in trouble. >> wednesday morning next week which is only a week away and we're into 2013 and no deal's been made, do you accept the fact that both guys are in trouble? >> i think it's a jump ball. i'm not sure what happens at that point. it depends on what the markets do. we'll say this. president obama doesn't have to worry as much as the members of congress do because he's not on the ballot again. >> but if there's a second recession, doesn't that kill his second te

president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president joe biden apparently dropped by the white house today. do you know if he and the president have spoken? >> reporter: well, he is here at the whi

so president obama was using his bully pulpit and the statement he gave yesterday and he'll be on "meet the press" tomorrow and even his weekly radio address all on this political topic. >> this pressure by the president on congress, how will this play out when it's time to start negotiations on the debt ceiling because best we can all tell, the raising of the debt limit will not be a part of any deal so we'll be having similar conversations in february. could there be resentment on the other side of the aisle? >> oh, absolutely, particularly if republicans feel they got rolled on this. the debt ceiling is the big leverage they hold on this entire debate. we've heard president obama say he's not going to play the same game he played in 2011 saying they got taken as hostages in a situation and debate that ends up hurting the u.s. economy. president obama says he doesn't want to do that again and it will be interesting to see how he maneuvers because congress will end upholding a vote and saying that congress no longer has the power on raising the debt limit. that remains to be seen and i

here is what president obama had to say on that point on "meet the press." take a listen. >> i was modestly optimistic yesterday but we don't yet see an agreement. now the pressure is on congress to produce. if they don't, what i have said is that in the senate, we should go ahead and introduce legislation that would make sure middle class taxes stay where they are. there should be an up and down vote. everybody should have the right to vote on it. if republicans don't like it, vote no. i think there's a majority support to make sure they are held. >> two points. first, he is saying if it passes the senate, he's calling on house speaker boehner to put his back up proposal to a vote. there's a big question over weather speaker boehner will do that. also, embedded in the president's answer there is a window into the white house and democrat strategy, to leave republicans holding the ball at the end of the process if the legislation goes down for defeat, it will go down for defeat on their watch. in essence, adding to the pressure of them to get something done.
